Canada &#8212; Who Will Win?<\/h1>\n<p>From the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/archive\/ca\/entry\/big-telecom-v-s-canada-who-will-win_b_3647902\">Huffingtonpost.ca<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.ca\/david-christopher-\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/s.huffpost.com\/contributors\/david-christopher-\/headshot.jpg\" alt=\"David Christopher\" width=\"45\" height=\"45\" \/><\/a>David Christopher\u00a0Communications Coordinator for Openmedia.ca<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldline.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/BigThree.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-995\" src=\"http:\/\/www.worldline.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/BigThree-243x300.png\" alt=\"BigThree\" width=\"243\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.worldline.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/BigThree-243x300.png 243w, https:\/\/www.worldline.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/BigThree.png 348w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 243px) 100vw, 243px\" \/><\/a>Big Telecom is at it again &#8211; Telus is now actually\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/report-on-business\/challenge-to-spectrum-regulations-not-ruled-out-telus-chief-says\/article13336375\/\" target=\"_hplink\" rel=\"noopener\">threatening the government with legal action<\/a>\u00a0if they follow through on their\u00a0commitment\u00a0to stop the Big Three cell phone giants from taking over public spectrum assets that were set aside for new affordable telecom options for Canadians.<\/p>\n<p>Telus reps are throwing a tantrum because they are afraid of losing the regulatory protections they&#8217;ve received in the past. We&#8217;ll see if the government gives in, but if they do it will be a complete about-face &#8212; the Conservative website currently boasts\u00a0<em>&#8220;We will not allow the big telecommunications companies to shut down competition by buying up undue amounts of wireless spectrum.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s not forget that this latest affront from Big Telecom on Canadians comes after we&#8217;ve just seen\u00a0Telus\u00a0and\u00a0Bell\u00a0introduce new two-year contracts with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/brainstation.io\/magazine\/telcos-raising-wireless-prices-to-spite-crtc\" target=\"_hplink\" rel=\"noopener\">substantially higher monthly rates<\/a>\u00a0than before. It now looks like Rogers\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mobilesyrup.com\/2013\/07\/22\/rogers-going-live-with-2-year-contract-terms-and-new-monthly-pricing-on-august-9th\/\" target=\"_hplink\" rel=\"noopener\">are following suit<\/a>\u00a0and increasing their monthly rates too.<\/p>\n<p>These price-gouging hikes come despite the fact that Big Telecom is making\u00a0huge\u00a0profits\u00a0off the backs of Canadians who already pay some of the highest prices in the industrialized world &#8212;\u00a0as confirmed by a recent 320-page independent report\u00a0&#8212; for some of the\u00a0worst service.<\/p>\n<p>The price hikes are further evidence that Big Telecom have embarked on a systematic campaign to undermine our\u00a0widely welcomed new cell phone rules\u00a0&#8212; rules that were shaped by thousands of Canadians who took part in CRTC consultations. Big Telecom&#8217;s multi-pronged campaign against Canadians includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Going to federal court\u00a0to undermine and delay new cell phone contract rules.<\/li>\n<li>Increasing their\u00a0already sky-high monthly cellphone rates\u00a0and using the new CRTC rules as an excuse.<\/li>\n<li>Unleashing an\u00a0expensive and misleading PR campaign, including full-page ads in newspapers across the country.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Why these higher monthly rates? Big Telecom&#8217;s flimsy excuse is that this\u00a0huge jump\u00a0in monthly fees is because of our long overdue move to two-year contracts.\u00a0<strong>What do the experts have to say about Big Telecom&#8217;s claims? Here&#8217;s what you need to know:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Telecom expert Professor Michael Geist examines Big Telecom&#8217;s argument in detail in\u00a0this well-researched piece\u00a0on his blog. Professor Geist concludes that\u00a0<em>&#8220;Without new competitors, the incumbent carriers will use this opportunity to increase monthly costs.&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0In other words, our higher monthly fees are the product not of shorter contracts, but of lack of independent choice in the marketplace &#8212;\u00a0over 93%\u00a0of the market is currently dominated by just three large, unaccountable conglomerates.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Professor Geist also highlights that\u00a0many other countries have 2-year contracts with cheaper rates than here in Canada. Spain for example has a highly competitive wireless market with much lower prices than here in Canada. Fancy a new iPhone 5 on a 2-year contract for under $35 a month, including 1GB of data? You&#8217;ll have to move to Spain for that. That same deal from Telus\u00a0will cost you $85 a month\u00a0under their new pricing structure.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Expert analyst Peter Nowak\u00a0points out\u00a0that even Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) users will see their fees increase under Telus&#8217; new fee structure &#8212; despite the fact that BYOD customers aren&#8217;t tied to a two or three year contract term. Big Telecom clearly doesn&#8217;t need any excuse to price-gouge Canadians &#8212; that&#8217;s why Canadian carriers make more money off of cell phone users than almost anywhere else in the industrialized world (fourth highest in the entire 34-country OECD).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Big Telecom also likes to use the excuse that our sky-high prices are the result of Canada&#8217;s large size. Our own Catherine Hart\u00a0thoroughly debunks\u00a0that argument, crunching the numbers to show that most Canadians live in a handful of cities &#8211; that&#8217;s why, according to Big Telecom&#8217;s\u00a0own lobby group, Canada has just a quarter the number of wireless towers that the U.K. has &#8211; despite our being 40 times the size of the U.K.<\/p>\n<p>Our high cell phone prices are acting as a real\u00a0dead weight on our economy, stifling innovation and hampering job creation. Canada cannot afford to keep falling further and further behind our counterparts in the rest of the industrialized world.<\/p>\n<p>It looks like it&#8217;s Big Telecom against\u00a0price-gouged Canadians,\u00a0innovators, entrepreneurs and business, legal\u00a0experts; and the list goes on. It&#8217;s Big Telecom against Canada &#8211; and I for one am betting on Canada to win\u00a0like we have in the past.<\/p>\n<p>The way ahead is clear &#8211; we need bold action to lower prices by\u00a0opening up our networks to all Canadians and new service providers. This idea has worked successfully in the U.K., Australia, and New Zealand. Canadians have laid out a\u00a0clear road map forward\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0send this road map to your M.P.\u00a0and demand action &#8211; tell your M.P. that Canadians have put up with Big Telecom&#8217;s price-gouging and disrespectful customer service for long enough.<\/p>\n<p><em>P.S.
