{"id":1104,"date":"2013-08-08T16:33:46","date_gmt":"2013-08-08T20:33:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.worldline.ca\/blog\/?p=1104"},"modified":"2024-05-15T21:35:41","modified_gmt":"2024-05-16T01:35:41","slug":"getting-past-the-spin-of-the-big-three","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.worldline.ca\/blog\/getting-past-the-spin-of-the-big-three\/","title":{"rendered":"Getting Past the Spin of the Big Three"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1105\" src=\"http:\/\/www.worldline.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/VerizonWirelessColorLogo2-1024x372.jpg\" alt=\"VerizonWirelessColorLogo2\" width=\"584\" height=\"212\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.worldline.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/VerizonWirelessColorLogo2-1024x372.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.worldline.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/VerizonWirelessColorLogo2-300x109.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.worldline.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/VerizonWirelessColorLogo2-500x181.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Once upon a time Canadians didn&#8217;t have much of an option when it came to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldline.ca\/services\/high-speed-internet\/\">Unlimited High Speed Internet<\/a><\/strong>, but as more choice has sprung up, more and more are fleeing <em>The Big Three <\/em>looking for a better deal, better service, less hassle, not contracts&#8230;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">You know, like what we do here at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldline.ca\/\"><strong>Worldline<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Unfortunately the reality for mobile telecom in Canada is far more problematic. Pretty much the only real options available are <em>The Big Three<\/em>\u00a0and they are doing everything they can to keep it that way. Witness the current coordinated marketing bombardment underway telling Canadians that the worst thing that could possibly happen to anyone, anywhere, anytime would be to have a fourth national mobile phone option in the Great White North.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The Vancouver Observer documents how they\u2019ve invested some of their record profits into an expensive PR campaign, including misleading\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/i.imgur.com\/f6dblry.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">full page newspaper ads<\/a>, in a clear effort to try to convince Canadians that cell phone service is not as bad as we know it is.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">They report:<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Big Telecom\u2019s ads rely heavily on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wallcom.ca\/pdfs\/price-comp-report_2013update.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a recent report<\/a>\u00a0on cell phone prices from Wall Communications that was commissioned by the government and the CRTC. Other reports on cell phone prices differ, with the well-respected J.D. Power Report concluding that\u00a0Canadian cell phone bills rose by 13% in the last year\u00a0&#8211; that\u2019s\u00a0thirteen times\u00a0the rate of inflation!<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">We all know how Big Telecom loves to cherry-pick information.\u00a0Here\u2019s what you need to know about the Wall Report:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\n<li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Telecoms expert Michael Geist responded to the report by\u00a0pointing out\u00a0that\u00a0\u201cCanada is described as being &#8220;on the high side&#8221; for virtually every key category, with only the U.S. faring consistently worse.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\n<li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Why does the U.S. seemingly fare worse in the report? Expert Peter Nowak has the answer,\u00a0explaining that\u00a0\u201cOn the wireless side, the new Canadian entrants are included, yet down in the United States, only AT&amp;T, Verizon and Sprint are counted.\u201d\u00a0&#8211; no wonder Canada seems to fare better, when cheaper U.S. providers were excluded from the comparison entirely. This is a bit like comparing the cost of a Ford or Toyota in Canada to the cost of a BMW or Mercedes in the U.S., and concluding that cars cost cheaper in Canada!<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\n<li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">There were similar issues with the comparisons to cell phone providers in the UK, with expensive providers like BT and Vodafone being included in the comparison, while much cheaper providers such as Tesco and GiffGaff were not.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\n<li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Nowak\u00a0also points out\u00a0that the Wall Report compares just six countries, three of which (Canada, Japan, and the U.S.) are among the most expensive in the world for wireless. Nowak explains that \u201cWhen additional countries are included in comparison \u2013 the Wireless Matrix compares 50, including 19 developed nations \u2013 Canada\u2019s standing isn\u2019t so middle-of-the-pack.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\n<li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Reddit user NowNowGuys\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/canada\/comments\/1i6442\/theres_no_way_this_ad_in_the_calgary_sun_is\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">makes a great point<\/a>: \u201cThe ad is spinning the fact that on one or two tiers of service, the US is even worse than Canada. The report also compared only 6 countries, Australia, Canada, US, France, UK and Japan.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\n<li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Why weren\u2019t more countries included in the report?\u00a0According to Peter Nowak, report author Gerry Wall says he \u201cwishes he could include more countries in his comparison, but he simply isn\u2019t given the budget to do so.\u201d\u00a0&#8211; no prizes for guessing why the government wouldn\u2019t want to provide funding for a proper assessment of Canada\u2019s high cell phone prices.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\n<li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Where there has been a price decrease, it\u2019s because our more affordable, independent providers are finally making their presence felt.The report found that\u00a0new independent providers such as Mobilicity, Public Mobile and Wind Mobile were between 14% and 39% less expensive than the Big Three\u00a0depending on the level of service.\u00a0(Wall Report, page ii).\u00a0Data plans from independent providers are 39% cheaper than the Big Three.\u00a0(Wall Report, page ii).\u00a0These indie providers are are in a precarious position because while we have made\u00a0some progress, the government has yet to undo regulatory protections for Big Telecom incumbents, and level the playing field.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldline.ca\/services\/high-speed-internet?pid=34\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-773 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.worldline.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/wl_save_internet.png\" alt=\"wl_save_internet\" width=\"151\" height=\"302\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.worldline.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/wl_save_internet.png 252w, https:\/\/www.worldline.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/wl_save_internet-150x300.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 151px) 100vw, 151px\" \/><\/a>Cherry-picking, slanted data, isolated stats.
