{"id":1748,"date":"2014-04-08T10:11:20","date_gmt":"2014-04-08T14:11:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.worldline.ca\/blog\/?p=1748"},"modified":"2014-04-08T10:16:58","modified_gmt":"2014-04-08T14:16:58","slug":"canadas-digital-strategy-for-telecom-what-it-means","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.worldline.ca\/blog\/canadas-digital-strategy-for-telecom-what-it-means\/","title":{"rendered":"Canada&#8217;s Digital Strategy for Telecom &#8211; What it Means"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1749\" alt=\"DC150 620x412\" src=\"http:\/\/www.worldline.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/DC150-620x412-300x199.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.worldline.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/DC150-620x412-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.worldline.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/DC150-620x412-451x300.jpg 451w, https:\/\/www.worldline.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/DC150-620x412.jpg 620w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Last week the Federal government announced their latest plan to improve Canadian telecom and Internet infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mediacastermagazine.com\/news\/canadas-digital-strategy-for-telecom-consumers-tv-subscribers-content-creators\/1003000337\/?ref=rss&amp;ctid=1003000337\">Mediacaster<\/a> put together a <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mediacastermagazine.com\/news\/canadas-digital-strategy-for-telecom-consumers-tv-subscribers-content-creators\/1003000337\/?ref=rss&amp;ctid=1003000337\">nice overview<\/a><\/strong> of what it all of it means but this is the key segment for Worldline:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Among the commitments contained in the\u00a0<em>Digital Canada 150<\/em>\u00a0document, a pledge to connect over 98 percent of Canadians to high-speed Internet by 2019, with speeds of at least five megabits per second.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While that does include nearly 300,000 Canadian households, mostly in rural and remote communities, that will have access to high-speed Internet for the first time, it also marks a\u00a0<a title=\"Mediacaster story about broadband access targets\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mediacastermagazine.com\/news\/crtc-sets-broadband-speed-targets-as-phone-rates-increase\/1000410282\/\" target=\"_blank\">change in the broadband commitments previously made<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The government had\u00a0set similar speed and access targets for 2015 for all Canadians; nevertheless, broadband connectivity projects will be eligible for federal funding under the Building Canada Fund.<\/p>\n<p>Allowing more Canadians access to the broadband telecom infrastructure means more Canadians with have better options, more choice, and the ability to go with companies like Worldline who believe we&#8217;ve all been overcharged for far too long.<\/p>\n<p>Canadians are understandably frustrated by their lack of access to broadband Internet. It&#8217;s a huge country, and providing access to the communication tool of this and next century requires a massive investment.<\/p>\n<p>This most recent injection is a nice boost, but obviously much more is needed. The only reason every Canadian doesn&#8217;t have broadband access, or has to pay through the nose to get it, is a lack of political will. To get Canada on pace with the rest of the modern world, more programs like Digital Canada 150 need to be introduced.<\/p>\n<p>The telecom advocacy group,\u00a0OpenMedia.ca agrees:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe government has had years to get this right &#8211; which makes [the] unveiling all the more disappointing\u201d, says <a href=\"https:\/\/openmedia.ca\/\">OpenMedia.ca<\/a> Executive Director <strong>Steve Anderson<\/strong>. \u201cThis reads like the digital strategy for the last 5 years &#8211; not for the 5 years ahead<strong>.<\/strong>\u00a0Although there are some positive proposals here, all in all Canada will still be left playing catch-up with the rest of the industrialized world when it comes to Internet access and affordability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last week the Federal government announced their latest plan to improve Canadian telecom and Internet infrastructure.
