With last week’s announcement from both HBO and CBS that they are going to offer their content online for a monthly subscription, the Television and cable industry are about to change in the U.S. And, according to this report, Canada will not be far behind.<\/p>\n

HBO is Coming<\/p><\/div>\n

(From the AP) Canadians who want to view specialty channels and watch their favourite shows\u00a0must go through their cable providers, like Bell and Rogers.<\/p>\n

But some industry experts say that may\u00a0change. They\u00a0suggest\u00a0that Canadians will inevitably have access to American content streamed online when\u00a0online streaming\u00a0becomes the norm and more and more people abandon their cable providers.<\/p>\n

It’s already happening south of the border. Last week, HBO\u00a0announced\u00a0that it will allow Americans to\u00a0stream its programming\u00a0online next year without having to\u00a0subscribe\u00a0to the cable channel.<\/p>\n

While HBO won’t be streaming its service into Canada, at least not yet, the experts say the pressure from the public and from some content providers to allow more streamed foreign content is bound to grow. And that could\u00a0mean\u00a0that Bell and Rogers\u00a0may eventually be relegated to essentially providing\u00a0the “pipe”\u00a0\u2014\u00a0\u00a0or the\u00a0actual cables,\u00a0connecting to households\u00a0that\u00a0facilitate\u00a0internet or wireless service.<\/p>\n

“[Rogers] controls the pipe as\u00a0does Bell. They will come to the realization, that\u2019s their model, forget about content, and all this other nonsense, they don\u2019t\u00a0really have anything of propriety there to offer,”\u00a0said Fred\u00a0Lazar, an economics professor at York University’s\u00a0Schulich\u00a0School of Business. “Focus on the pipe, control that, and essentially increase the rates charged there as people start migrating.”<\/p>\n

Companies like Netflix, which provide quick online streaming access to films and TV shows and cater to binge viewers, have roared to success, putting the future of cable in jeopardy. (Paul Sakuma\/Associated Press)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cWhat [Bell and Rogers are]\u00a0going to do is try and slow the migration as much as possible and try and better position themselves through different types of\u00a0pricing to take advantage of the inevitable migration [from cable to online],” he said.<\/p>\n

In a sense, cable companies were the Netflix of their time,\u00a0Lazar\u00a0said, mostly providing cable subscribers programming (much of it American)\u00a0that had been created by others, while also supplying a healthy dose of Canadian content.<\/p>\n

But then the internet came along, providing a more direct\u00a0distribution forum for\u00a0content that allowed customers to pick and choose what they wished to view. Companies like Netflix, which provided quick online streaming access to films and TV\u00a0shows and catered to binge viewers,\u00a0roared to\u00a0success, putting the\u00a0future of cable in jeopardy.<\/p>\n
