{"id":2279,"date":"2014-10-28T12:01:18","date_gmt":"2014-10-28T16:01:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.worldline.ca\/blog\/?p=2279"},"modified":"2014-10-28T12:01:18","modified_gmt":"2014-10-28T16:01:18","slug":"5-of-canadians-cut-the-cable-over-the-past-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.worldline.ca\/blog\/5-of-canadians-cut-the-cable-over-the-past-year\/","title":{"rendered":"5% of Canadians Cut the Cable over the past year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"color: #333333;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-200\" src=\"http:\/\/www.worldline.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/netflix-logo-1024x576.png\" alt=\"netflix-logo\" width=\"584\" height=\"328\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.worldline.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/netflix-logo-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.worldline.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/netflix-logo-300x168.png 300w, https:\/\/www.worldline.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/netflix-logo-624x351.png 624w, https:\/\/www.worldline.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/netflix-logo.png 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/>According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.ca\/2014\/10\/27\/cord-cutting-netflix-cable-subscriptions_n_6053474.html\"><strong>Huffington Post<\/strong><\/a>, Canadians aren&#8217;t using scissors to cut their cable TV subscriptions, they&#8217;re using weed whackers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #333333;\">The news portal\u00a0reports that between Shaw and Rogers, they\u2019ve lost nearly 200,000 cable subscribers in the past year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #333333; padding-left: 30px;\"><a style=\"color: #7c54d3;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rogers.com\/web\/ir\/financial-reporting\/quarterly-reports\" target=\"_hplink\">Rogers\u2019 latest quarterly report<\/a>, released this week, showed the company lost 111,000 TV subscriptions over the past year, or about 5 per cent of their TV customers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #333333; padding-left: 30px;\">Shaw\u00a0<a style=\"color: #7c54d3;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.shaw.ca\/uploadedFiles\/Corporate\/Investors\/Financial_Reports\/fourth_quarter_results_2014.pdf\" target=\"_hplink\">lost 82,000 over nearly the same period<\/a>, or 4 per cent of their total. Its satellite TV service, Shaw Direct, lost 6,600 customers. If Rogers\u2019 and Shaw\u2019s experience is typical, this would suggest nearly one in 20 Canadian households ditched cable TV over the past year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #333333; padding-left: 30px;\">Both companies managed to offset some of the loss with gains in internet subscribers. Rogers gained 51,000 new internet subscribers, while Shaw saw 71,000 more \u201cstandalone\u201d internet customers, meaning internet but no cable.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #333333; padding-left: 30px;\">The new earnings reports illustrate the impact of the cord-cutting phenomenon. The CRTC, Canada\u2019s telecom watchdog, said earlier this year that\u00a0<a style=\"color: #7c54d3;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.ca\/2014\/05\/16\/tv-subscriptions-shrink-canada_n_5336843.html\" target=\"_hplink\">2013 marked the first time total cable subscriptions in Canada declined<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #333333;\">Broadband Internet is the inevitable choice for Canadians, as they are getting their video entertainment elsewhere, instead of from\u00a0traditional television providers.
