Canadians are paying too much!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2589\" src=\"http:\/\/www.worldline.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Screen-Shot-2015-03-23-at-4.28.53-PM.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2015-03-23 at 4.28.53 PM\" width=\"152\" height=\"103\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.worldline.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Screen-Shot-2015-03-23-at-4.28.53-PM.png 152w, https:\/\/www.worldline.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Screen-Shot-2015-03-23-at-4.28.53-PM-150x103.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 152px) 100vw, 152px\" \/>This should come as no surprise:\u00a0Canadians are pretty much near or at the top\u00a0of the list when it comes to\u00a0their\u00a0telecom\u00a0expenses.<\/p>\n<p>According to a\u00a0report issued Monday by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.piac.ca\/\"><strong>Public Interest Advocacy Centre<\/strong><\/a> (PIAC), an Ottawa-based consumer advocacy group,\u00a0Canadians are spending between $100 and $212 a month per household on communications services.<\/p>\n<p>What do those\u00a0numbers mean exactly? It means Canadian Internet and Phone providers, compared to other country&#8217;s\u00a0providers, are\u00a0taking advantage\u00a0of\u00a0their customers. What&#8217;s worse, as\u00a0Canadians increasingly consider their communications services not just a luxury, but rather a necessity, the poorest are taking the biggest hit.<\/p>\n<p>Low-income households account for between 8 and 15 per cent of the population and an average of 7.6 per cent of their total annual expenditures is going to communications.<\/p>\n<p>That exceeds\u00a0what they are\u00a0spending on other necessities like clothing, health-care and education. As a result,\u00a0they\u00a0are making cuts in other areas, such as food.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #373737;\">&#8220;They\u00a0are making cuts in other areas, such as food&#8221;<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>This is upsetting to say the least. It&#8217;s also\u00a0frustrating because\u00a0most of these people don&#8217;t know that have an opportunity to save a serious amount on their telecom expenses, simply by changing providers.<\/p>\n<p>Big Telco have a near monopoly on the marketplace due to their aggressive marketing campaigns. They are everywhere,\u00a0and as a result of\u00a0this carpet-bombing\u00a0strategy their\u00a0captive marketplace is repeatedly told, &#8220;you have no place else to go.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, due an improved\u00a0educated consumer class, increasingly this messaging is falling on deaf ears as smaller ISP&#8217;s, like Worldline, are encroaching on their market share.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/John_Stix\"><strong>John Stix<\/strong><\/a>, the president of Fibernetics, Worldline&#8217;s parent company said,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;There is a clear market trend that we have noticed over the past two years. Our customer base has dramatically increased and that is a simple result of letting more Canadians know, when it comes to Big Telco, they don&#8217;t have to take it anymore.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Providing a fairly priced, high-quality service is all that Canadians are asking for. Ours is\u00a0a simple business model: Be nice, be fair, be open and honest and new\u00a0customers will come. Then, once they are onboard provide awesome customer care to ensure they stay with us forever.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>PIAC suggests that the government and regulatory decision-makers should get involved, and they lay out a five point regulatory program that would change the course of Canadian telecom.
