We Don&#8217;t Need No Stinking Contracts!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-275\" alt=\"nl-banfield-laurel-300-20130219\" src=\"http:\/\/www.worldline.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/nl-banfield-laurel-300-20130219-150x150.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/>Now this is the kind of news story we can really sink out teeth into!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\" data-mce-mark=\"1\">We just hate national news stories that make our competition look like money grubbing scam artists&#8230;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\" data-mce-mark=\"1\">Courtesy of CBC News:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Laurel Banfield has a problem with her contract for home phone, cable TV and high-speed internet services \u2014 she didn&#8217;t even know she had one.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The company won&#8217;t give her anything in writing about it, and she is locked in for another eight months.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cIt&#8217;d just be nice to have something in writing showing my obligations as a customer to Rogers,\u201d Banfield said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Last year, after she saw her bill go up a couple of times, Banfield called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rogers.com\/\">Rogers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The agent applied some discounts to her services. That&#8217;s where the problem started.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">By agreeing to those discounts, Banfield unwittingly entered into a contract. She says she\u2019s since been told that the cancellation fees to get out of it are $60 per month. So she\u2019s staying with Rogers until September.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cI guess I keep paying them until they tell me I don&#8217;t have to,\u201d Banfield said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Banfield isn&#8217;t the only person to get frustrated about tangly contract situations and unexpected fees.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Last year, the provincial government decided to take action to aid consumers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The result, Bill 6, is aimed at making contracts easier to understand.<\/p>\n<p>The law\u00a0says fixed-term contract cancellation fees are capped at either $50, or the remaining portion of any discount offered on equipment. For example, a consumer signs a three-year contract for a $600 iPhone, but gets it for free. If they decide to end the contract a year early, they would be on the hook for $200 \u2013 the pro-rated portion of the phone\u2019s value.<\/p>\n<p>Under the law, the province can go to court on behalf of the consumer.<\/p>\n<p>Good for them, but still, what a huge pain in the butt!
