You\u2019ve read all about the pros and cons of minimalism, started exercising at home, and found a new hobby to distract yourself from the fact that your team isn\u2019t playing.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Have you backed-up your phone and your computer?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If that\u2019s another one of those things you planned to get to \u201csomeday\u201d, what better time than now?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It&#8217;s not likely you need convincing\u00a0that backing up your computer is a good idea, but in case you do: If your computer is the only place all of your photos and documents are stored, and something happens to it, your data\u00a0is likely gone. Forever. Enough said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>But where to start?<\/p>\n<h2><b><\/b><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">CLOUD STORAGE<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>At a bare minimum, the first step is <strong>ensure you\u2019ve switched on any cloud backups<\/strong> that are part of your computer or phone operating system (<a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-ca\/HT203977\">iCloud<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/office\/back-up-your-documents-pictures-and-desktop-folders-with-onedrive-d61a7930-a6fb-4b95-b28a-6552e77c3057?ui=en-us&amp;rs=en-us&amp;ad=us\">OneDrive<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/android\/answer\/2819582?hl=en\">Google<\/a>, etc) which should take care of the majority of your documents, photos, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitaltrends.com\/mobile\/how-to-save-text-messages\/\">texts<\/a>.<span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><i>Advantages<\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span><\/span>Cloud storage is <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>convenient<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/span>Your data being \u201cin the Cloud\u201d means it\u2019s stored on a server somewhere and you can access it anytime you want from any<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-3745 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.worldline.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/smartphone-with-cloud-and-sun-icons-and-uploading-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Smartphone with cloud icon for data backups\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.worldline.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/smartphone-with-cloud-and-sun-icons-and-uploading-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.worldline.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/smartphone-with-cloud-and-sun-icons-and-uploading-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.worldline.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/smartphone-with-cloud-and-sun-icons-and-uploading-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.worldline.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/smartphone-with-cloud-and-sun-icons-and-uploading-450x300.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/span><\/span>device (as long as you have an active internet connection).\u00a0Once you select and turn on a cloud service, it takes care of everything for you, making it <strong>simple and easy to use<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Cloud storage adds a layer of <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>protection<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span><\/span>your data is physically housed somewhere else so if your computer loss is due to theft or damage, your data is safe and secure. Also, cloud services have <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>redundancies built in:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>your data is distributed across multiple locations so you\u2019re very unlikely to lose it in the event your cloud service server experiences theft or damage.\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">You generally <strong>pay for what you use<\/strong>. Cloud storage is based on a subscription model so you\u2019re not paying for a lot of space you don\u2019t need.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><i>Disadvantages<\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/span>\u00a0Cloud storage <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>relies upon a good internet connection<\/b><\/span> to keep updating the latest version of your data, and for restoring from a backup. So during a power outage or while travelling, any updates you make locally may be lost, and not all data may be available to you. Also, restoring from backup can take a long time, relative to a local restore.<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>If the data you\u2019re storing is very sensitive, then <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>unauthorized access to that offsite data may be a concern<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><\/span>but unless you have a branch of MI5 in your basement, it\u2019s probably not going to be an issue for you.<\/p>\n<p>While your operating system\u2019s backup service will backup the majority of your <em>content<\/em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0it <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>won\u2019t always backup all of your computer settings or\u00a0the applications<\/b><\/span> you\u2019ve installed. This can make migration to a replacement device more cumbersome than simply clicking \u201crestore from backup\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b><br \/>\n<\/b><b>LOCAL EXTERNAL DRIVE<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">For a more comprehensive backup, consider a local external drive: a physical device you either plug into your computer or add to your network for all devices on that network to backup to.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-3744 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.worldline.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/versatile-hard-drive-PVQB4PS-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"External hard drive for storing data and restoring from backups\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.worldline.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/versatile-hard-drive-PVQB4PS-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.worldline.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/versatile-hard-drive-PVQB4PS-768x509.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.worldline.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/versatile-hard-drive-PVQB4PS-1024x678.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.worldline.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/versatile-hard-drive-PVQB4PS-453x300.jpg 453w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><i>Advantages<\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span><\/span>Backing up your data and restoring from a local backup is <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>much faster<\/b><\/span> than cloud storage. It <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>doesn\u2019t rely on an internet connection<\/b><\/span> and it\u2019s much <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>easier to create multiple snapshots of your data. <\/b>So,\u00a0<\/span>depending on how frequently you backup, your data is constantly up to date and you can roll back to earlier captures.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Disadvantages<\/em>: <\/span><\/span>When using a local drive there is the <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>additional step of managing the backups<\/strong><\/span><\/span> and performing backups on a regular basis. To mitigate this, consider purchasing a NAS (Network Attached Storage); a hard disk on your network that allows any properly configured computer within range to backup to it automatically. This is especially advantageous for families with many devices. It\u2019s expensive but it holds a lot of data, making it a one-time purchase.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Another disadvantage is the<strong> physical location of your local drive<\/strong>.
