Earlier this year it was the coming down on Bell for their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldline.ca\/blog\/official-press-release-worldlines-statement-on-crtcs-dsl-ruling-of-february-21-2013\/\">Internet price gouging<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This time the governing body that oversees Canadian telecommunications has taken the hammer to mobile phone providers who have been taking advantage of their customers for years.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the good news&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">Canadians can cancel their wireless contracts without fees after <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">two years<\/span>, under the new wireless code unveiled Monday by the CRTC.<\/p>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.crtc.gc.ca\/eng\/com100\/2013\/r130603.htm#.Uaya69g_eYw\" target=\"_blank\">The wireless code<\/a>\u00a0also caps charges for extra data at $50 per month and charges for international data roaming at $100 per month to prevent bill shock, the CRTC said in a release.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The new rules by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission will apply to new contracts for cellphones and other personal mobile devices starting Dec. 2.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cEvery day, Canadians rely on wireless devices while in their homes, at their jobs, at school or travelling abroad,\u201d Jean-Pierre Blais, chair of the CRTC, said in a release. \u201cThe wireless code will contribute to a more dynamic marketplace by making it possible for Canadians to discuss their needs with service providers at least every two years.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The CRTC said that, among other things, individual and small business consumers will be able to:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\n<ul style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Terminate their wireless contracts after two years without cancellation fees, even if they have signed on for a longer term<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\n<ul style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Have their cellphones unlocked after 90 days, or immediately if they paid for the device in full<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\n<ul style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Return their cellphones within 15 days and specific usage limits, if they are unhappy with their service<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\n<ul style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Accept or decline changes to the key terms of a fixed-term contract and receive a contract that is easy to read and understand.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The wireless code will apply to all service providers in Canada, in particular where customers pay a monthly bill after using their services and, where applicable, to pre-paid wireless services, the CRTC said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cThe wireless code is a tool that will empower consumers and help them make informed choices about the service options that best meet their needs. To make the most of this tool, consumers also have a responsibility to educate themselves,\u201d Blais said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldline.ca\/services\/home-phone-and-high-speed-internet?pid=34\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-738 alignright\" alt=\"Worldline Bundle\" src=\"http:\/\/www.worldline.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/wl_save_bundle1.png\" width=\"189\" height=\"378\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.worldline.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/wl_save_bundle1.png 189w, https:\/\/www.worldline.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/wl_save_bundle1-150x300.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 189px) 100vw, 189px\" \/><\/a>All of this came about because Canadians had simply had enough.<\/p>\n<p>The CRTC\u2019s public consultation on the wireless code attracted over 5,000 Canadians, who shared their views on an online discussion forum, in writing and at public hearings.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldline.ca\/services\/home-phone-and-high-speed-internet?pid=34\">Worldline<\/a>&#8216;s not a wireless provider (yet). We&#8217;ve been trying for years, but on this, the CRTC hasn&#8217;t been playing nice with others, but we&#8217;re working on them.<\/p>\n<p>That said, isn&#8217;t it cool what a pile of ticked off citizens can do?
